The Hardest Letters to Use in Word Puzzles (And How to Defeat Them Like a Boss)

Published on April 12, 2026

What’s up, guys? Your 14-year-old puzzle guide is back! Let’s talk about video game design for a second. In every great game, there are easy enemies (like the little goombas in Mario), and then there are the "Bosses." Bosses are terrifying, they ruin your combos, and if you don't have a strategy, they will end your run.

Word puzzles have bosses, too. The easy enemies are the letters A, E, S, T, and R. You can defeat them with your eyes closed. But the bosses? The bosses are Q, X, Z, J, and V.

When you load up a custom grid on LetterBoxedPlay and see a 'Z' staring back at you from the corner, your heart sinks. These letters are awkward, rare, and incredibly frustrating. But after failing against them a hundred times, I figured out their weaknesses. Today, I am going to teach you how to defeat the 5 hardest letters in word puzzle history like an absolute boss.

Boss 1: The Needy 'Q'

The letter 'Q' is the most annoying letter in the alphabet because it is incredibly needy. In the English language, 'Q' almost NEVER goes anywhere without its best friend, 'U'.

The Problem: If you save 'Q' for the end of the game, and you have already used up all your 'U's in different words, or if 'U' is on the same side of the box as 'Q', you are completely dead.

The Strategy: Attack 'Q' immediately. Make it your first move. Scan the board for the 'U'. Once you find it, build a word around them.

Weapons to use: EQUIP, QUEEN, LIQUID, SQUAD, UNIQUE. (Notice how "UNIQUE" is a brilliant word because it uses 'Q' but ends with an 'E', giving you an easy start for your next word!)

Boss 2: The Blocky 'X'

The letter 'X' feels like a brick wall. It stops the flow of a word completely. Most people try to put 'X' at the beginning of a word, like XYLOPHONE, but let's be real—nobody knows any other words that start with X!

The Problem: You try to force 'X' into the middle of a word and it just looks like gibberish.

The Strategy: Treat 'X' as an ending or a prefix, never a starter. 'X' is brilliant at ending small words. Even better, look for an 'E' and use the prefix 'EX-'.

Weapons to use: BOX, FOX, AXE, FIX, MIX. (For bigger words): EXTREME, EXAMPLE, COMPLEX, EXCUSE. If you use 'EX-', you turn a weird letter into a massive advantage.

Boss 3: The Rare 'Z'

'Z' is tricky because we use it so rarely in texting or writing that our brains literally forget it exists until we see it on the puzzle board.

The Problem: 'Z' is a combo-breaker. It is very hard to transition into or out of a 'Z'.

The Strategy: 'Z' loves the letter 'E' and 'I'. You have to isolate the 'Z' and build a quick, punchy word to get rid of it. Do not try to make a 10-letter word with a 'Z' in it; you will just confuse yourself.

Weapons to use: ZERO, ZEBRA, SIZE, CRAZY, MAZE. If you are lucky and the game allows double letters, "PIZZA" and "BUZZ" are amazing bailouts.

Boss 4: The Sneaky 'J'

'J' doesn't look scary at first. It looks like a friendly, normal letter. You think, "Oh, I'll just use it later." That is exactly what the 'J' wants you to think!

The Problem: 'J' is great for starting a word (Jump, Joke), but it is virtually impossible to end a word with 'J'. If your previous word ended in a weird letter, and you are forced to start your next word with 'J', you might be trapped.

The Strategy: Link the 'J' with a suffix. Don't leave it dangling.

Weapons to use: ENJOY, MAJOR, INJURY, NINJA. If you must start with it: JUMPING, JOKING. (By adding -ING, you move the ending letter to a friendly 'G').

Boss 5: The Awkward 'V'

'V' is the mini-boss. It isn't as rare as 'X' or 'Z', but it behaves very stubbornly.

The Problem: In English, words very rarely end in 'V'. Think about it. Can you name a word that ends in V? (No, abbreviations don't count!). 'V' almost always demands that an 'E' follows it.

The Strategy: The "V-E" combo is your only way out. Whenever you see a 'V', immediately locate the 'E' on the board. If the 'E' is on the same side of the box as the 'V', you are in trouble and have to find a workaround (like using an 'I' for "VIRUS").

Weapons to use: HAVE, GIVE, BRAVE, HEAVY, RIVER, EVERY.

The Golden Rule for Boss Letters

If you take anything away from this article, let it be this: Do not procrastinate. When you are playing a video game, you don't ignore the boss and fight the tiny minions while the boss shoots lasers at you. You focus all your energy on taking down the biggest threat first.

Do the exact same thing in Letter Boxed. When the grid loads, find the Q, X, Z, J, or V. Build your very first word around that terrible letter. Get it off the board immediately. Once the boss is defeated, the rest of the vowels and easy consonants are just a victory lap. Good luck out there, gamers!
